Message reported in the Evening telegraph this evening (24/1/06)...

Broughty Muslim school closes

The Muslim school for girls in Broughty Ferry, Dundee, has been closed by its trustees after more criticism by the schools’ inspectors, writes Andrew Argo.

Speculation mounted today the Imam Muhammad Zakariya School, the only one of its kind in Scotland, was shut by its trustees ahead of being forced to shut by the Scottish Executive. This followed the serving of a notice of complaint by Scottish Ministers.

The closure of the school in Strathern Road was said in a statement by the Executive today to be temporary.

No one was available at the school today to say if the trustees had plans to reopen it.

The establishment, opened in August 2001 in the building of a former nursing home, fell foul of Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Education when they carried out their first review in August 2004.

The inspectors delivered a damning judgment, finding its 20 girls were receiving a very poor and restricted education in secular and religious subjects. They ordered it to carry out urgent improvements or be closed.

At the end of September, Scottish education minister Peter Peacock said progress had been made following the appointment of a new head teacher, Gaye Nicolson. He asked the inspectors to go back in December to check on the situation.

The inspectors made that visit, and also checked to see if the school met a new range of criteria for independent schools.

Today a spokeswoman for the Scottish Executive said, “The trustees of the school informed the Registrar, the Care Commission and HMIE by letters it had temporarily ceased the provision of secular education and boarding facilities.”

The spokeswoman declined to comment on whether there was a connection between the school’s closure and the latest HMIE report.

Message I couldn't agree more! All they do is transfer their parents prejudices and superstitions. The only ones who gain are the imams and priests - society loses.

Message Education is an expensive business and without state funding it is difficult to raise the standard of education. There are hundred of state schools where Muslim children are in majority, All such schools may be designated as Muslim community schools with bilingual Muslim teachers as role models. Muslim Educational Trusts or Charitiies should manage and control such schools.

Message The problem with Muslim schools is that they are not teaching any other religion other than the Islamic one. I dissagree with what Iftikar says for that reason.
Teachers in the Islamic tradition need to change their priorities whilst teaching in a non-Muslim country.
Girls in particular are disadvantaged if they only learn about the Muslm way of living. When they leave school, they find a very different world outside, unless they stay strictly within the Islamic confines. As has been said before, the best way is to teach about all faiths.

Message Maureen/Naureen gets it at last!!!! They only teach Islam - they do not want to understand other cultures. If you are taught one thing from birth you believe - what im saying is that islamic kids are taught from birth that the west and its occupants are evil, if they move here guess what.... splinter cells. Get them out now before we have a yugoslavia on our hands!

Message im a muslim and i would love my kids to go to a muslim school but if thats not possible then they can go to any school providing its of a high standard, its not the school that inforces these one minded thoughts on religion, i was only taught chritianity at school and here i am a revert!!! it would be nice if all schools taught everything, then at least you can learn about everyone and that i think will stop alot of hatred,i wasnt taught islam at school and kids were always mean to what they dont understand, you fear what you have no knowledge upon hence why if you know all you may (hopefully) learn to love all, but this isnt down to just schools to inforce, start education at home and stop blamming schools, my father was a teacher for me at home an i learnt from nazi life to islam to jews to black and white etc and alhumdullilah it gave me a wider outlook on life, and i thank him for this, maybe thats why im not a mean person towards others and accept all, islam isnt about only loving islam u are infact meant to be kind to everyone,if you are mean to non muslims then how can you expect them to revert(if thats wat u want) we as muslims ought to show kindness, but at the same time you have to use ur own initiative to not judge an tar all with the same brush.

Message British schooling is the home of institutional racism and British teachers are chicken racist. This is one of the main reason why Muslims, Hindus and Sikh communities have been setting up their own schools with their own teachers. Even Black community is thinking of setting up its own schools with Black teachers.

Nearly 88,000 racist incidents were recorded in Britain's schools between 2007 and 2011, the BBC has found.

Data from 90 areas shows 87,915 cases of racist bullying, which can include name calling and physical abuse.

Sarah Soyei, of the anti-racism educational charity, Show Racism the Red Card (SRRC), said: "Unfortunately, the numbers of recorded racist incidents are just the tip of the iceberg.

"Racism is a very real issue in many classrooms around the country, but cases of racist bullying are notoriously underreported.

"Often teachers may not be aware of racism in their classrooms because victims are scared of reporting them out of fear of making the situation worse." Many local education authorities say that the increase in reported incidents - up until 2010/11 when the guidance changed - is due to better recording methods.

However, anti-racism charities say that it is a growing problem in many regions.

"We are seeing a real increase in racism in some areas which is down to factors like a growth of Islamaphobia in society which is filtering into classrooms," said Ms Soyei.

"Racism towards eastern European and gypsy and traveller communities is also on the increase," she added.
